The Martin Luther King Coalition

The 28th Annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration took place on Monday January 18th, 2010. Despite the 6 - 12" of snow some people had to deal with to get there, we had a full house to honor Martin Luther King Award recipient Arnie Alpert, and the Martin Luther King Arts & Writing Contest winners of the Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Awards ,Danielle Lelio, Mercedes Murphy, Matt Segil, & Amanda Martin of Lee, all students of Oyster River Middle School in Durham; and Honorable Mentions Isabelle Beagen of Madbury, who also attends Oyster River Middle School, and Jake Pierce Scarponi of Barrington, who attends Barrington Middle School.

This past year proved that our hopes in starting this website 3 years ago were realistic: that our website would be found to be a valuable source of information about the Annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration, including the Martin Luther King Award, the Martin Luther King Arts & Writing Contest, the Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Awards, the Guest Speaker, and the historic roster of Previous Recipients of the Martin Luther King Award. We were phoned by interested visitors to the site from as far away as California & Hawaii!

Additionally, you will find the Website to be a year-round asset via the educational benefit of our Speakers Bureau, and the site’s links to our Member Organizations as well as other Martin Luther King-related Websites.

As construction continues, you’ll enjoy being able to find information about the Coalition’s beginnings and what it has become today, guest speakers, & other notables who have been a part of the Community Celebration. You will also be able to find information about the local entertainment showcased at the celebration.

We hope you’ll come back to visit often. The News Page will be updated to reflect current events of the Coalition's Member Organizations when their Reps provide the information, particularly those events related to the aims and ideals of Martin Luther King.
