In its efforts to educate youth about the life, work, & principles of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, the Martin Luther King Coalition offers an opportunity to students in Grades 6, 7, & 8 throughout the state, to demonstrate an understanding of Dr. King's principles regarding a particular Theme chosen each year and The Words of Martin Luther King chosen from one of his many famous speeches. Students placing 1st & 2nd are honored & presented awards at the Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration.

A panel consisting of volunteers from the Martin Luther King Coalition Member Organizations’ Representatives perform the difficult task of choosing the entries that will win the Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Awards in the separately judged Arts Contest and the Writing Contest & the $100 cash prize to be presented at the 26th Annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2007.
