Being a Member of the Martin Luther King
Coalition is not just an honor; it's a commitment.
- The Member Organization Representatives (Member Org Reps) are the individuals who
make it possible for the Coalition to present the Martin Luther King Day
Community Celebration by carrying out Essential Tasks required to "make it
happen".
- Some of the Member Org Reps serve on the Steering Committee (SC),
which is responsible for all the planning & preparations for the MLK Day
Community Celebration, 10 months in the making. After a 2-month break,
the new year begins in March with a Segue
Dinner Meeting of the SC, to look back at January's Celebration;
it's a time for them to celebrate what was enthusiastically received,
as well as a time for analyzing what can be improved
upon. They do everything from holding the statewide Martin Luther King
Arts & Writing Contest; to performing the arduous
task of choosing one Martin Luther King Award Recipient from a very impressive pool of candidates;
to securing an impressive & apropos Guest Speaker, and a Master or Mistress
of Ceremonies to direct the celebration with great aplomb; to acquiring musical
entertainment for your listening pleasure; in effect, overseeing all the intricacies of
putting on the Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration. They also
maintain a Speakers Bureau, available year-round, primarily
to educate
students regarding the life, work, and principles of the Reverend Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.
