Web Changes & Coalition NewsThis is where we'll announce the most recent additions to our Website & news about the Coalition itself. If you've visited us before and want to know what's changed, take a look here first.
President Barak Obama will hold a Town Hall Meeting at Nashua (NH) North High School on Tuesday, February 2 at 2 pm. NH's Peace & Justice Community are encouraged to be at the high school as early as 10:30 am with the sign of one's choice ("Stop the Afghan War"; ("A Trillion for War & Occupation"; "Bring Our Troops Home", and so on). Participating Martin Luther King Coalition Member Organizations are AFSC-NH and NH Veterans for Peace.
One of the aims of the website is to provide links to not only our Member Organizations, but also to our Sponsors & Supporters without whom we wouldn't be able to present the free & open to the public Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration. Please support these organizations & businesses, each of whom have a page on this site. Clicking the ad of on their page will bring you to their websites (if they have one), so you can find out more about them & what they do.
Before a full house -- which obviously would have been standing room only if not for the snowstorm -- the 2010 Martin Luther King Award was presented to Arnie Alpert, Program Coordinator of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC-NH)! Arnie was a key player in the 20-years-to-success movement to make Martin Luther King Day an official state holiday in New Hampshire. He served tirelessly for ~25 years on the Martin Luther King Coalition Steering Committee. Senator Jeanne Shaheen's office presented a Letter of Commendation from the former NH Governor who signed the bill making Martin Luther King, Jr. Day an official state holiday.
Oyster River Middle School students in Durham once again swept the top prizes, but a lone student from Barrington Middle School, working entirely on his own, captured an Honorable Mention for his entry in the Writing category. The Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Awards Winners were honored & presented their prizes by State Employees Association President, Gary Smith, at the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Community Celebration on Monday, January 16th, before a full house!
The 2010 Community Celebration's Guest Speaker was Harvard Professor Mica Pollock, Ph.D., who managed to make it 'to the church on time' from Boston, despite 6 - 12" of snow, depending upon where you live. Mica is a researcher & author of several books on how youth and adults discuss and address everyday issues of diversity and opportunity in schools. Pollock’s first book, Colormute: Race Talk Dilemmas in an American School won the 2005 Outstanding Book Award. Mica truly enjoyed our celebration, and is one of the only Speakers who has stayed for the entire celbration, from beginning to end!
